disable the windows default SMTP version. If you need it for sending email via ASP, then you can do a smarthost to your SMTP for handling the email.

Install 'hMailServer' which is a very soild and stable free email server for windows based.

2000 and 2003 only got IIS SMTP, no pop3.

You can take the suggestions from tanfwc or luzhixianus. Get either of these 2 free mail server and you will have both smtp and pop3.

If you just want SMTP (send out emails, not receiving), you can install SMTP via add/remove programs from control panel, add windows component, then look for it inside the IIS setup. You will need a 2000 or 2003 OS disc.

I have used ArgoSoft email server before. If I am not wrong, it is still freeware. Pretty good too!

do try smartmail too. The free version allows you to use for 1 domain.

How much load will you have on the mailserver? If you will not be using it much, then the Free MailEnable edition should do the job. If it is going to be heavily loaded, I'd recommend you go with SmarterMail. We've had quite a bit of trouble with MailEnable randomly crashing or freezing up. No problems whatsoever with SmarterMail...
