You can get a domain from namecheap.com or godaddy.com who specialise in domain registration. I will give my vote to namecheap. I have used them for several years and certainly love their service.

Choose accredited registrars, like named above, also sibername.com and godaddy. You also may get hosting solutions of quality from them. I specially recommend sibername.

I normally separate domain name with web hosting. I use NameCheap for domain name and HostGator for hosting. This is a better choice =)

Registering domain I only trust accredited registrars, such as enom, godaddy and suggested above sibername.com Most of them are not a good hosters, that is why i would prefer dealimg with hosting providers for this services, but some can really be good for any sphere of service they offer.

Also prefer accredited registsrars. Some of them like sibername and godaddy are also not bad hosting providers, especially considering one can offer free domain name within the hosting plan.

For cheaper prices with whois, I would choose netfirms.

I think the control panel to manage your domain is also quite important especially you want to do update detail in for your domain name.

I find Enom and Webnic control panel not bad. Quite straight to the point when you want to do something.

You could always check your domain Whois whether the domain administrative contact is under your personal contact info, so that it can make sure the domain is belong to you.

Hosting provider stop you from jumping? either you direct look for webnic or you must look for registrar. I think every registrar , but hosting provider do stop you to transfer? i dun think they will do that because they do not have the priority to do so. Lot of transaction steps , that is yes because everyone you transfer also do need to do so. So you need to be patient if you do like to transfer domain name.
