HOWTO - Transfer full websites between Cpanel hosts

Hello everyone. This HOWTO is for transferring of full websites between cpanel and cpanel hosts ONLY.

Please take note that I am in no way responsible for any damages to your data/system and follow at your own risk !

Firstly, logon to the Cpanel of the user you wish to transfer over. Go to
Backup >> Generate/Download a Full Backup >> Generate Backup . Choose the Home Directory as your Backup Destination. Wait for the backup to finish, it might take a while if you have alot of data.

Now, SSH into your server you wish to transfer the account to. Then

Code:
 cd /home
Then logon to the CPanel you were in just now and under
Backup >> Generate/Download a Full Backup >> Previous full backups saved in home directory
Right click on the latest full backup you just made, and click 'View Properties'. Copy the full URL to the backup file, then paste it into your SSH client like this to download the backup file into your server /home directory.

Code:
 wget -c http://linktoyourbackupfile.com/backup-x.x.xxxx_xx-xx-xx_username.tar.gz
Next, untar the file by issuing this command

Code:
tar zxvf backup-x.x.xxxx_xx-xx-xx_username.tar.gz
Then, if you issue the "ls" command you should see the folder
"backup-x.x.xxxx_xx-xx-xx_username" and also the file
backup-x.x.xxxx_xx-xx-xx_username.tar.gz still there. Next, rename the folder to get ready for restoring it.

Code:
mv backup-x.x.xxxx_xx-xx-xx_username cpmove-username
Now, we're all ready to restore the account ! Issue the following command to do so.

Code:
 /scripts/restorepkg username
Let it restore....and take note of any errors that happen. If the restore fails, very importantly you MUST take note of the error message and troubleshoot from there. Do NOT attempt to keep transferring the account without solving the error message first. Cpanel tends to screw up if you keep restoring and terminating. Usually it should work though, unless special circumstances.

After restoring, be sure to login to the NEW server through the IP since i believe you have not changed the DNS settings yet. Check that everything is successfully transferred, and are running well. Leave the old data on the old server for at least 1 week after the transfer before removing it.

I think thats all, anything else feel free to ask, although im not very good at this too Thus... follow at your own risk !

hi,

can this transfer be done only if you are the root ?
or it can be done even if you are just a reseller but with SSH enabled.

Yes you probably need root in the server you are transferring too.

Tried many times using the cPanel to backup and transfer over to a new server. When I use cPanel again to restore on the new server. It doesnt work. The cPanel just extract the files out and did nothing. Does the ssh methods does the same thing? Or is it anything wrong with my servers backup and restore thru cpanel??

There is a version where backup and restore feature was broken due to some mis-coding in the main file. cPanel fix it after I reported it

Or simply code a shell script to do all that for you which is much more flexible if you have root access :p

If you are root,it is easy, just go to WHM,choose Transfer/Copy account from another server to your server directly. If you keep root of both servers, just fill in IP,root pass and user to transfer. If you have Cpanel user and pass, also can transfer. This process is quick and easy, less than 10' for 500MB website.

For Windows server it is not so direct as below mention: -

1. For some folders and files you can create a batch file to copy it to yours destination folder and configure the batch file to run under the schedule.

2. For some software folders and files you might need to purchase their acceptable backup software and their software connector to do the backup.

I think if you do not have root access, and try to restore the full backup, it might not work properly, as

What I used to do is to capture and restore the home backup, however, the mysql data backup has to be done manually. i also had the experience in older version of cpanel that after restoring, the email accounts not function properly.

if you have root better pack account by Cpanel command then scp it to new server. It is the fastest and most secured way to transfer account between 2 servers using WHM/Cpanel
