request: Managing Dedicated Server

Hi,

Anyone care to share how to manage dedicated server (DS)?
Like steps to bind domain to DS, setup apache for multiple domain, DNS setup, pop and snmp mail setup.

Thanks.

The easiest and cheapest way out for you might be to subscribe/purchase a control panel, many of these services can be automatically done through a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

If you need more complex configurations and hardening than this, then you might want to search for a system administrator to help you manage your server for a fee on a pay-per-piece, monthly, or yearly basis.

Else if you decide that you do not want to pay anyone, or for anything to get all these done, then perhaps you want to Google all of them, pick up some reference books, and so on. However, no one will be able to perform all these tasks effectively without a good combination of theory and practical knowledge.

A good start would be to lease a VPS and install Webmin.com 's GPL control panel. It'll require more manual work then say cPanel, but you'll learn along the way.

I am missing the leads to decipher the middle section of your last entry.

However, based on the error message you have given, i suspect that you have yet to register the nameserver with your domain registrar. Some registrar call it "child nameserver", some others call it some other names.

Just to clarify: Unlike entering a sub-domain when you're in your registar's control panel you'll need to enter an IP address. So you'll be asked for 2 pieces of information which will be your IP address and a name for your nameserver, such as: ns1

It's been some time, but when your in your domains control panel on the bottom right there'll be a selection for creating a nameserver. I believe it's called a domain host, or something similar.

Awesome. BTW you should also have A records pointing to the same IP's, so don't delete those you created earlier.
