Is it better to start your own hosting company or become a reseller?

Could you share your ideas concerning the title of the topic? Thanks in advance.

Budget is very important. It depends how much you have.

If you mean to lease a server versus a reseller plan on someone else's server, knowledge and practical ability are just as important as budget. You must either maintain it yourself or hire someone. Without basic server operation knowledge, it will be difficult to run a server even with per-hour support. So absent that ability you'd be better off going as a reseller to start.

I agree with udnsus undoubtedly. First thing you should do is to pick up knowledge and experience in online business as much as possible, because if you have money, but not experience, you will fail exactly. That's why I recommend you to start with reselling, and then begin your own company in the future.

Most pple start from reseller programs if they want to get a server one day. The risk of reseller programs is that the cost price is pretty much higher than purchasing an individual account. Profit margins may be affected as a result. Some reseller programs do also offer in-house support for your clients, if you do not want to handle the support.

Affiliate programs are a good way to test the market as well, as practically no risk in involve. The only downside is that clients may not really belong to you. Also, you do not have access to their hosting control panel account.

Ultimately, it really depends on your own capabilities and what you want to achieve. For long term wise, I feel, reseller is a better way.

If you are not a technical expert and dont have much experience for managing server then its better to go with a reseller hosting plans.
Make sure try to get a host who is available for your technical issue round the clock thus you can support your clients in more better way Else you can start with your own hosting company. I will recommend you to have a VPS or a dedicated server if you want to start your own hosting business.

All the Best

Running a Hosting Business

Hi,

Speaking from experience. Running a hosting business is never easy. As the rest have mentioned in this thread. Experience vs Money.

My thoughts right now for starting up would be to do hosting as a reseller on the side first even though the profit margins are small at least its still some income; and have a regular pay from another job.

Once you have enough customers, then get a dedicated server to put all your customers on for easier consolidation.

It would be best to also offer some other service such as web design alongside with hosting so that you can add value to your customers.

All the best.

Right, Managing Hosting business is not a easy job, you need technical skill as well as marketing skill. Hosting Business is over saturated market with heavy competition;) You need to keep your extra-unnecessary expenses at minimum.

You should become a Reseller first by starting with Reseller plans. As your accounts starts increasing, you can upgrade to a VPS then a Dedicated server, it will provide you to resell more resources like space and bandwidth which ca easily accommodate more accounts. You also need to check if the hosting provider offers any support to your customers, or are you responsible to provide them support. Starting a new hosting company will need a lots of money initially with a good technical staff. So its good to become a Reseller by just purchasing a simple hosting plan and reselling it further and using their Technical staff to provide support rather than starting a hosting company and investing lots of money.

Ofcourse be a hosting provider company but that not easy . But hosting company do have a appropriate management, back office support, a real environment to serve and manage your hosting. If you be a reseller, you may get a price control from your hosting provider which they may increase your price or limit your freedom to manage all by your own. Your provider may take you into risk if your provider do not provide a 100 % uptime.
