Newbie - Dedicated servers

Hi,

I would like to know what it actually mean by dedicated server?

Do I purchase a server and host it with a datacenter or a hosting company? If so how much?

Or do i purchase a server from a hosting company?

How much do i have to pay to the company which help house my dedicated server??

If you purchase a server, your option would be to to co-locate the server with a datacenter, or with a hosting company that resells datacenter rack space. For colocation, you are responsible for any server related issues, including but not limited to a failed hard drive, mis-configuration of OS settings, and etc.

On the other hand, if you lease a server from a hosting company (i.e. "dedicated server"), the hosting company owns the server and rents it to you on a monthly or longer contractual period basis. Server administration and maintenance wise, depending on the offerings, you may be able to choose from unmanaged (i.e. self-managed), semi-managed or fully-managed. You'll have to check with the company on what's covered in each of the options.

Now, in regards to amount that you need to pay, the range varies widely - it can be as low as 80 per month, or as high as 800 per month. Location, server specification, bandwidth allocation, SLA, managed/unmanaged services are some of the factors that affect the total cost.

Hi elohkcalb,

Tk you very much. This has been informative.

Would you happen to know how much does one server cost?? The average servers for a start up?

And how much does a co-location with a datacenter cost monthly??

Well, frankly speaking it's hard to define the meaning of "average", different company will have different needs and hence different server specifications. You might want to check Dell's website for their 1U server, which you'll get an idea of how much such server costs.

Once you have the size of the server (e.g. 1U, or 4/5U if you try to slot in a desktop PC), go ahead and get a quote from the datacenter of your choice. Again the rate differs, mainly depending on the rack space and the alloted bandwidth.
