SGNIC announces implementation of Registry-Registrar System

SGNIC announces implementation of Registry-Registrar System

With effect from 1 Jan 2003, SGNIC will no longer accept or renew domain registration from users.

Existing registrants whose domain names are due for renewal on or after 1 Jan 2003 are advised to arrange for domain name to be transfer to accredited registrars.

who will you choose?

1. Adicio
2. IP Mirror
3. Pacific Internet
4. Singnet
5. Webvisions

Adicio's: $88 for one year and $176 for 2 years.

IPMirror: $80/yr +GST and they are offering control panel I think?

PI: $80/1 yr, $140/2 yrs and they will charge $30 for setup eventually.

Singnet: $90/1 yr, $160/2 yrs with $30 setup.

Webvisions ... Win! Din even bother to update their website.

I'm just wondering, these guys are charging even higher than SGNIC! I though competition is supposed to bring the rates down??? Maybe we should make some noise to lobby for lower rates ... then again ... this is Singapore.

What did I tell you? This is a crazy move on SGNIC's part in the first place. They have to charge it high because the rate the registrars are being charged by SGNIC is HIGH.

It's a loss-making business for them. As if the .sg domain is in tremendous demand....

Quite a pleasant surprise... Webvis is only charging $58/yr and $110 for 2 years. This definitely look much more "pro consumer" compared to what the rest is offering. But of course, there is still room to move (downwards!).

anyone have any idea what's the rates SGNIC is charging these registrars? I suspect Webvis is subsidising the registration fee in hope of getting more hosting customers?

Back when I was still working we did the calculation, can't remember the exact figure but it was high - you need a significant number of registrations PER MONTH to break even, don't talk about profit yet.

I am however, ignorant to new rates or policies that may have been introduced.

That's what is stated in the sgDomain newsletter to their customers.

Should ask them if it's true, not me.
:p

I am just sharing what I have read.
cheers

They are doing this because SGNIC's cost prices to them are high, the total number of domain registrations is low, and this does not even factor in their own development or outsourcing vendor costs, the accreditation costs as well as miscellaneous other adminstrative and billing costs, all of which adds up to a substantial amount.

Just as a matter of information, please do take note that the complete list of the accredited .sg registrars (there are 5) are listed at http://www.nic.net.sg/ You should probably do well to see who the registrars are before just following referrals.

really depends on what you are looking for.
PRICE, EASE OF MAINTENANCE, SUPPORT etc ...

The same questions arise when choosing a registrar for .com.sg

Completed transfers for 14 .com.sg domains already and I'm pretty glad that everything went smooth.

What I paid : S$70 for transfer and 1 year renewal.

I know. It is not the cheapest but at least I know I am in good hands.

BTW - There are resellers accounts available from the registrars. Just in case you guys are looking - I could provide some contacts.

Well, it really depends. Each registrar requires you to go with a certain volume of registrations before they are willing to sign you up as a reseller. If you are really interested, I started a new thread on .COM.SG reseller accounts. Look for it.

Maybe with enough interest, I could work out a deal with one of the registrars.

Oh ... currently, based on support - I would say AdiCio

Based on user friendliness of the control panel - IP Mirror wins without a doubt.

SGNIC's registry-registrar system is a thick registry. Which means that all the domain database, whois records, zone files are stored in SGNIC's database, not on each registrar's database.

Not much support can be expected from a registrar, if SGNIC's root servers are down, your domain will still be down no matter which registrar you're using. And if SGNIC's SgR2R gateway is down, you won't be able to register/transfer a domain name no matter which registrar you're using to register your domain.

I don't see a reason why it's difficult to choose a registrar. Just choose the cheapest one.

Cheers.

Oops! will become famous soon enough
I have several .SG domain names with them.

They don't have a feature-packed or luxury control panel, but their service was relatively efficient and helpful.

Thumbs up.
